FACTS...

Native to Africa, Australia and Asia, one of the two basic varieties of Lemongrass, Cymbopogon citatus hails from west India. Citatus refers to the citrus, lemon like scent. Cymbopogon derives from the Greek words kymbe (boat) and pogon (beard) which refers to the structure of the plant, a hairy grass projecting from the boat shaped spathe.

This variety of Lemongrass has a long history of herbal application in both India and Africa. According to the oldest surviving Sanskrit, dating back to third century B.C., this plant was used first to combat fever. In addition to medicinal use, the grass was widely used in rituals as aromatic body wash + perfume.

Citral is the main constituent of lemongrass's oil, this powerful component is antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, a sedative on the central nervous system, headaches and stress relief.

A well know cousin of Lemongrass is Citronella, Cymbopogon nardus. As a plant they look and grow the same with subtle differences in colour. Citronella is not encouraged for consumption while Lemongrass is. However both host those powerful properties that help ward off mosquitos.
